Dr. Rajan Mahtani’s Company Finance Bank Zambia Instrumental In Establishing Steven Malama Award

Dr. Rajan Mahtani is known for his several business achievements spanning more than three decades. At the same time, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has made a unique name for himself with his charitable and philanthropic activities. These charitable and philanthropic activities have been observed across several sectors and areas such as education, environment, social work and poverty among others. One of the most significant philanthropic activities from Dr. Rajan Mahtani in the field of education has been the launch of the Steven Malama Award. Late Steven Malama was a close friend of Dr. Rajan Mahtani and a distinguished professional in the legal framework of Zambia. Late Steven Malama was a bar luminary, Supreme Court professional and contributed significantly towards the growth and development of legal framework in Zambia. One of his major contribution was persuading the Zambian Government to develop a legislation that would merge the two distinct bars in Zambian legal framework. These two bars were Barrister’s Bar and Solicitor’s Bar and were merged into one single bar for legal professionals and law students to affiliate. 

Dr. Rajan Mahtani established the Steven Malama award for honouring this legacy of late Steven Malama. This award is presented to the top graduating law student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education after qualifying for the bar in their first attempt. The award was presented for the first time in 2013 and since then, it is given every year to the deserving students. For the year 2018-19 the award was received by Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba. The award carries a plaque, a certificate and an award money worth K15,000 for the winner.
